She will be running Ruh and Fergie.

- Emma Gray with Graylees Flute and Banjo

- Lisa Gast with Scalpsie Ace and Scalpsie Herbie
In 2012, I moved to Scotland with my first Border Collie called Harvey. Since then ive worked on a few different farms learning all about shepherding. Working with sheep has been a dream and leaning to work and trial my dogs has made me very happy. Before moving to Scotland I used to work in a tax office with long commuting times every day. Its definitely been a change!
Ian and I are your hosts for the Scalpsie Trial of TOB and we really looking forward to see you all!
I love the relaxed atmosphere and holiday feeling the trials give me. I hope people will enjoy them as much as we do!
At the trials this year i will be running two homebred dogs Scalpsie Ace, who has had a couple of seasons now and Scalpsie Herbie, who has just finished the Nurseries, its his first open season. So we have still got a bit to learn but we will try our best.

- Matilda Young with Tandy and Jess
We run 1200 sheep a mix of mules blackies and texels. Low ground.
I started trialling 10 years ago. I used to compete in agility and obedience with my dogs and when I got more interested in the working sheepdog it was quite natural to start trialling as I like to compete with my dogs.
Jess would be my most successful dog. She got me in the team two years ago and have several placings and an open win.
At TOB I am excited to seeing some new dogs you haven’t seen, hopefully great weather and hanging out with friends.
I’m running Jess she’s 6 years old. She’s my number one dog she always gives you her best and never stop. Second dog is Tandy she’s a daughter of Jess she’s 4 years old. She got great stamina and would work all day.

- Michael Gallagher with Hillrunner Bee and Avon Roy
Michael Gallagher has previously judged at Trials of Bute (at the hill trial – The Plan hosted by the Patersons) and is looking forward to competing there for the first time. He says, ‘It is a chance to meet and compete against different competitors from all over the world and also gives a rare opportunity in Scotland to qualify for a double gather.’
Although Michael grew up with sheep and dogs (his father ran 500 Scottish Blackface and competed at trials) and Michael attended many dog trials growing up, his early passion was the Irish sport of hurling – an amateur team sport dated back over 3,000 years played with a wooden stick (hurley) and a small ball (sliotar) with points being scored by shots through or over the goalposts.
Forced to give up hurling for health reasons, Michael’s father gave him a 6 month bitch pup Gyp who Michael trained himself and had almost immediate success as she made the Nursery final and later won him his first Open trial (2005). Michael and Gyp were crowned International Young Handlers Champion in 2005. Despite suffering serious kidney failure and being out of action for 8 months, Gyp returned in 2006 to competition and made the National team in 2008 before dying tragically young aged 7. A family friend John Kennedy offered him a Nursery dog he had trained and turned out to be Michael’s famous Cap, his best dog to date making the Supreme 4 times (in chronological order placing 8th, 6th, 1st, 4th), and winning International Qualifier, International Driving and International Supreme in 2010. Cap also placed 3rd in the Worlds in 2011.
After Cap, Flo took up the reins and was in the Irish team three times as well as Canadian champion when Michael was working in North America. More recently Val was in the Final of the World Trial in 2017, national Irish Champion in 2019 and Scottish team member in 2022. His current dogs are Roy, winner of 10 Opens as well as being Central Nursery Champion and Bee (Central Nursery Champion in 2024, Scottish team member reaching the Supreme in 2024).
Michael and his partner Ellie Nilsson look after 550 ewes and 150 ewe hoggs of EasyCare sheep and also do some contract gathering, alongside breeding, training and selling dogs worldwide

- Stuart McCrindle and Nap
I run 900 mule ewes and 200 blackface ewes a flock of pedigree texels all in bye ground.
I started working with sheepdogs when I was 21 I always had an interest in them as a boy growing up and when I left school I served my time as a welder so it was when I turned 21 I had some sheep and got myself given a pup for my 21st birthday from my uncle and it all started from there. Success is just hard work and a talented dog. I have had my luck at trialling but it’s been down to a lot of help and advice by good handlers around me at the time of taking up the hobby.
Am looking forward to the time away with family and friends. I have been In Scottish team 7 times and have been runner up at nursery final twice and have won open trials and judged at national level and judges abroad.

- Billy Welsh with Meg and Bob
I run 2200 ewes,1600 Scottish blackface, and 600 crossbred ewes, our ground is about 85% ruff hill grazing and the rest workable green land. I started trialling when I was 16 , I think dogs and trialling are in my blood. I think my biggest success has to be winning my first trial way back when I was about 18 with my Sweep dog bought from the late Wullie Cook as a pup, I sold him later that year to Hartford Logan and he went to Canada. I have had a lot of good faithful dogs in my time but the one that stood out the most was Max, he was different – I only got to run him in 6 opens and he was placed in every single one. He also had and two run offs to win but finished 2nd in both, probably my fault, but the opposition wasn’t too shabby – Jock Welsh and then Duncan Robertson. Unfortunately, Max was struck down with leukaemia at 3 years old and it took me a year or two to get over over it, and I lost interest for a while. I would love to have a dog like Max again someday and get a place on the Scottish team. I was honoured to be asked to judge the trials of Bute a couple years ago and loved the people and the atmosphere. Bob is the best dog I’ve had for a while, not the most consistent, but on his day can pull it off. Meg is a little stick of dynamite – a great willing and hard worker and has picked up her share of placings at trials but has never won – she’s a little too enthusiastic most days.

- Gert Van Dyck with Lhinnek Rhum
I’m Gert Van Dyck and me and my wife Ann are farming south type blackies and Luing cattle on an organic hill farm in Aberfeldy, Scotland which we part own and part tenant from the beginning of this year. I got my first dog 5yrs ago and ran my first trial after a year. I managed to get a few second places, 3rd, 4th and so on but I’m still working on my first Open win. Lhinnek Rum is my main dog and best friend and I very much enjoy running him.
I made a career switch from project engineer to shepherd. I preferred working outside with dogs over working inside with people. I still prefer a day filled with dog work over a day trialling and find it more important that a dog performs well at work than on the trial field but it makes work a lot easier and tidier if you train your dogs to trial standards. It’s a good way to meet new people too and speak to other sheep farmers, shepherds and sheepdog enthusiasts.
Scalpsie Fae is the dog that taught me everything as we got her fully trained, she’s enjoying retirement now. Lhinnek Rum is my main dog now and the one I trial with.
I aim to improve my training, trialling and breeding, on the trialling side open trial wins and Scottish team member
I’m looking forward to ToB to meet new people, learn from some of the best handlers, seeing new dogs in stunning trial locations…
Lhinnek Rum was the first dog I had since he was a pup. I got him from Laura Hinnekens as I really like her lines. He turned into a nice dog with a very big heart and I would actually say he’s my best friend. He’s got scope, really enjoys the hills and has a good forward gear. The biggest problem holding him back is probably his handler but I look forward to see where we can go together.

- Kenny Donald with Bill and Mo
We run 70 sheep on a couple of fields, Hebridean mostly, purely for dog training and keeping the grass under control!
I started trialling a very long time ago! I was encouraged by Jimmy McGregor of Calcreugh Farm, Fintry to give it a go. Never been to a trial before and didn’t know a thing! I was second in the local and it went downhill after that.
My key successes and fav dogs were… Choc was 8th in the team in 2017. Other dogs have done well for me over the years including Joe, Jade, Nell, Bob, Choc and Bill.
My ambition is to be better this week than I was last week! Learn from past experiences and keep going for as long as I can
What am I looking forward to at ToB? Great atmosphere and catching up with friends at a great competition and trying to get to the final on the Sunday
This year i am running Bill. He needs no introduction, this is my 4th season with him and he is very dependable.
Holly (Mo) I ran last year, her first year out the nurseries. So I hope she is easier to handle this year and starts to achieve her potential.

- Stuart Davidson with Mack and Dan
I’ve been trialling for the last 48 or so years, with the very first trial I competed at being Ardlamont, held near Tighnabruaich, that day’s run wasn’t particularly successful but I kept trying thereafter!!! Memorable trialling achievements for myself would be winning 5 Scottish National titles with Ben, Moss, Chief, Whiterose Kep and Rob and 2 International Supreme titles with Craig and Star. The dogs I am competing with at Trials of Bute 2025 are Mack and Dan.

- Craig Davidson with Straid York and Kyle
I currently have 4 dogs to help manage our flock of Scottish Blackface sheep based near Dunoon, Argyll on the West Coast of Scotland. My personal favourite trialling highlights are probably being on the Scottish National Team 7 times and reaching the International Supreme Final on a couple of occasions. The dogs I will be competing with at Trials of Bute are Straid York and Kyle.

- Katy Cropper with Jacobsdale Gin and Roy
Katy Cropper has a long track record of success in trials.
‘I’ve been blessed to have so many lovely dogs that have helped me along the way. The three-legged dog Lad was given me by Jim Cropper and he taught me more than anyone else about sheep and dogs. Then there was Trim I won One Man and His Dog with in 1990.
I got into the English team a few times with doubles (Tsavo and Zak and Tsavo and Scrum) and singles. I won the English National doubles in 2017 with Tsavo and Scrum – first woman to win the English National Doubles. Last year at Bute I was Reserve Champion to Chris Toner.
I love starting pups and young dogs and that’s what I mostly do here at Shap. I also breed Scottish Blackface sheep’.

What you are looking forward to about The Trials of Bute?
We always look forward to our stay on Bute. The last few years myself and Karen have treated Bute as a sheepdog holiday, with picturesque landscapes, coastal waters and breath-taking scenic drives and walks. The Trials of Bute is a very enjoyable event with a double lift final. Looking forward to meeting old and new sheepdog enthusiasts. It is a privilege to get running on such magnificent courses.
Tell us about the dogs you are running…

Can adapt to any practical situation on the Farm. Gold really grew in confidence during lambing, which was testament to his successes in the Trial field with numerous open placings.

- James McCloskey with Dollar and Oak Bruce
We run around 350 blackface sheep on mountain ground mostly Swaledale/Lanark /Herdwick & Mayo (from County Mayo – also known as ‘Westie ewes’) and we keep 100 Texel & Suffolk on the lowland
I started off trialling roughly 17/18 years ago, at a few local trials , I didn’t get into it too much at the start because I was working and played football at weekends, the more I did go to trials as the years went by, I seem to miss some football games, I was not great at football either !
Sweep was the dog that put me going ,strong/ classy / and all forward gears, I’ve never saw a sheep take him on, I got Sweep as a 12/13 week old pup from Derek Scrimgeour, so a lot of thanks goes to Derek. Sweep got me on the team down over the years and the best ones were 2014 and 2016 been reserve Irish champion , his daughters Fly & Dollar have got me on the team in the last few years ,and 2024 Dollar finishing 2 nd in the international first round and went on to finish 4 th in the supreme .
This is my 3th year going to Bute trials , it’s very well run and some good course , first year I went I finished 2nd with fly, second year fly was going well again all had to be done was close the gate, we will say no more what happened Dollar on the other hand finished 3 the so that made up for the mistake with fly .
2025 dogs I’m running are Dollar again , and my nursery dog (oak Bruce) he is taking Fly’s place this year , Fly will not be running at trials 2025 .

I was the captain of the Welsh Team in 2017 in Holland. I took 7th place in the International Supreme in 2016 with Kinloch Levi. We live on a 70 acre farm in Carmarthen where we run a mixed flock of Cheviots, Scottish Blackface and Black Welsh Mountain sheep

I’ll be competing this year with Llangwm Tom and Groesfaen Moss both are line bred back to my earliest dogs from the late 1970’s.
NB Aled is judging the Brace competition at The Trials of Bute

USA 1 Dog
- Robert Kirila with Kinloch Pippi
At Kirila Ranch we run a small flock of Katadhin ewes and another cheviot ewes. Our ground is what you all would call low lands. We call it Florida.
We started trialling two years ago for the purposes of improving our skills as well as finding a way to create community outside the military.
I am neither distinguished nor super talented. I like my dogs but I also think they won’t be too much of a threat to be on the podium.
It’s our ambition to get to know some of the incredible people of the sheep dog world and watch a good dog or two.
As an American having heard about and read about all of the Scottish Sheepdogs and history, I am most looking forward to standing at the handler‘s post on a Scottish trial field with the mountains in the water in the sheep in the distance.

France 2 Dogs
- Guillaume Josien with Jip and Rita
I started in the sheepdog world in 2008, with my first dog, Killiebrae Jip and a year after with Bob, from Bobby Dalziel. I’ve been really lucky with this 2, becoming in 2010 and 2011 national champion with Jip and 3rd with Bob. I’ve spend a lot of time in uk to learn how to train dogs, and I’ve been really influenced by Bobby Dalziel way of training. Since then I’ve been again national champion with Llanfarian Queen in 2021, reserve the year after, and third with a dog called Ben. I’m now trialling with Jip and Rita from the mating of Llanfarian Queen and Rita.

Hungary 2 Dogs
- Petra Szarvas with Nordevind Novel and Bori
I own a small flock of Racka sheep (traditional Hungarian breed). Due to the drought we’ve been experiencing in the past 5 years I can’t have more than 30 sheep otherwise my fields (5 hectares) can’t supply them with enough grass to eat. Hungary in general is a very flat country so my fields are all flat as well.
I’ve owned Border collies for almost 20 years now. I tried herding with my first dog as well, but I got fully immersed in trials and sheepdogs about 11 years ago when I had my first brilliant homebred dog, Meggy, who was the perfect dog to start out with. She is very easy to handle, has lots of sheepsense and I never had to worry about her not knowing what to do in certain situations even when I was a beginner handler. I absolutely love working with animals, so for me it was fascinating to see and experience that I’m handling a dog that’s handling the sheep, and at the same time I need to understand the sheep as well in order to help the dog out when needed.
My first trials that I’ve won were all thanks to my first trial dog, Meggy. As we don’t have many trials (maybe 1-2 per year in Hungary) we went on to trial in different countries in Europe (Austria, Czech Republic, Poland, Germany, France, etc.). She’s won many trials and got placed on even more. My second dog, who I bought from Sabine Ehlers from France, Nordevind Novel, became even more successful than Meggy. Together we’ve achieved so much more than I’ve ever imagined. He won many trials as well, but the biggest success was our first ever World Trial in 2023 in Northern Ireland – it was both mine and his, and even Hungary’s first participation. After an amazing qualifying run we’ve got into the semi-finals which is a huge success in itself for such a small herding country. But I would have never dared to dream to get into the finals and I was standing there as the only female handler. In the end Novel did an amazing job, and we managed to finish with our heads held high with a 13th place.
My other achievement that I’m proud of is when Novel’s daughter, Bori won on field 1 at the 2024 European Nursery Championship.
I’m not a highly ambitious person when it comes to trialling. My main goal always is to just enjoy the work together with my dogs and be able to manage a challenging course or sheep. I just want to have a nice time while being out on trials with other people who enjoy the same activities as I do. I love traveling so it’s an added bonus that I get to do that while going to trials in different countries.
I’ve stayed for a week before the 2023 World Trial on the Isle of Bute, and the landscape has me in a chokehold ever since. I really wanted to come back at least once more, and what a perfect opportunity it is that I get to attend the trial as well. So I’m looking forward to being back on the island again and having some time well spent with my dogs.
I’ll be running my main trial dog, Novel, who has lots of experience under his belt. I’m also running her daughter, Bori, who’s been in Open class for a season now. I’m looking forward to seeing how they’re going to handle the sheep and the fields on the trial. And I can’t wait to watch the other handlers and their dogs as well.
I’m working as an official veterinarian for now, but I’ve been always involved with the farm vet work as well. I’ve loved working with animals for as long as I remember, and I liked biology and chemistry too, so I knew I wanted to do something with those and work in a medical field.

Austria 2 Dogs
- Barbara Weinrauch with Nap and Mot
Sweden 13 Dogs
- Thomas Westman with Vallhunden Cola
- Katja Maines with Kraxa and Killibrae Dee
- Karin Söderberg with Vallhunden Debb and Flyn
- Julia Engstroem with 1 dog
- Mosse Magnusson with Beacons Baden and Don
I have a small farm not far from where I’m born, I only keep around 50 sheep for training my dogs. I have the grey, curly Gotland sheep. My farm is a mixture of small fields and woodland.
After nearly eleven years in Scotland I now have both my sons and grandchildren very close to me. One living on the farm and the other one have a farm next to me.
I started trialling early 1990. I like to develop my dogs and advance their skills.
I’ve been Swedish Champion seven times, also Scandinavian Champion, Continental Champion. In Scotland, I was a team member 6 times and in the Supreme three times, my best result in the Supreme was third place. I’ve also been Isle of Man Champion, Royal Welsh Show Champion and Scottish Nursery Champion with Don.
Today I mostly enjoy to train my young dogs
Going to Trials of Bute will be very nice, looking forward to see all my friends in Scotland and off course try my best to do a decent result there.
I’m running my Don dog, who won Scottish Nursery my last year in Scotland, He’s by Kevin’s Derwen Doug and T Procter Gill, Don made the semi in the last World Trial.
I’m also running Beacons Baden, he’s by Kevins Evans’ Hybeck Blake and D Evans Kemi Maid.

- Johanna N. Johansson with Craigshield Lass and D’anakims Gilly
At the moment I’m helping a farmer in my neighbourhood running 400 crossbreed ewes and this is also where I do all of my training. At the moment I have no sheep of my own.
I entered my first trial 2013 with my first border collie Bliss. He was a great dog for a beginner and did very well introducing me to the sheepdog world. With the help of experienced handlers and farmers I got the courage to enter a sheepdog trial, and here I am today – loving it!
Ever on Ztill, my second border collie, is and will always be the dog that made me. Together we had a lot of achievements I am extremely proud of and he deserves all the cred he can get. He retired last year.
– 3x Swedish National Champion
– 2x Reserve National Champion
– Nordic Champion
– 3rd Continental Championship
– 3x Young Handler Champion
D’anakims Gilly is the new main dog and my ambition is to keep the same standard as I did with Ztill. Tough, she is still young but so far she has done extremely well for me and is the Swedish Nursery Champion 2023 & 2024. She will be competing at Bute this year. She is a sharp and stylish bitch with a nice feel and balance.
The second dog I will be running is a young bitch I bought a couple of months ago, Vallhunden Li. She 20 months old and she’s a fast bitch with a touch of crazy, but with a bright future ahead of her in my eyes. She needs a lot of experience and Bute will be a great place for it.
The Trials of Bute are my absolute favorite trial over the years and look forward to the variety of fields and courses, the scenic views as well as the great atmosphere with sheepdog enthusiasts. Happy to be there!

- Ann Blomquist with Lantställets Soya and Dollar & Mikael Larsson with Jive
We are a couple from Sweden, living just outside Gothenburg
on a small farm where we raise sheep and enjoy the company of our dogs. Mikael
works as a roofer, often spending his days outside the farm, while Ann runs
clinics and takes care of the sheep. We both share a passion for competing with
our dogs, traveling across the country, and meeting new people. One of the
highlights of our summer is always the Bute trials, an event we look forward to
with great excitement.
