Transport
Discover, experience and explore Scotland’s most accessible Island. Just 33 miles from Glasgow and easily reached from the Scottish Central Belt.
Serviced by Caledonian MacBrayne Ferries, there are two main routes to the Isle of Bute.
Enjoy picturesque landscape and coastal waters, with a breath-taking scenic drive to the Colintraive ferry terminal. Alternatively you can escape quickly to the Isle of Bute via the Wemyss Bay ferry terminal, which is also serviced by a direct train line from Glasgow Central Station, getting you from Glasgow to Bute in around an hour and a half.
The principal route to the island is by car & passenger ferry from Wemyss Bay or Colintraive.
The crossing takes 35 mins from Wemyssbay with sailings every 45mins – 1 hour depending upon the time of day.
The crossing from Colintraive takes only about 5 minutes and with sailings every 30 min depending on time of day.
Accommodation
The Isle of Bute offers a diverse range of places to stay, from grand Victorian hotels and seaside guest houses to unique woodland cabins and wild camping spots. Depending on your budget and preference, you can find accommodation in the main hub of Rothesay or tucked away in the quieter coastal villages.

Local Attractions
The Seals at Scalpsie, Otters or Red Squirrels in the forests of Bute are often the stars of any seaside Adventure here on Bute.
- Kyles of Bute & Tighnabruaich Day Trip: A full day excursion linking Glasgow, Kilcreggan, and Rothesay.
- Rothesay Outward Call: 1:05 PM (Passengers can disembark for time ashore on Bute, or stay aboard to cruise the Kyles of Bute to Tighnabruaich).
- Rothesay Return Call: 4:15 PM (Departing Rothesay to head back to Kilcreggan and Glasgow).
On Bute we are also especially lucky to have Mount Stuart House which is a magnificent 19th-century Victorian Gothic Revival mansion situated on the east coast of the Isle of Bute. Renowned as the ancestral home of the Marquess of Bute, it stands out as one of Scotland’s most technologically advanced and architecturally opulent historic homes.
- The Marble Hall: An astounding 80-foot-tall central hall constructed from fine Italian, Sicilian, and French marble, topped by an intricate ceiling depicting the constellations of the night sky.
- The Marble Chapel: Built entirely out of white Carrara marble, featuring magnificent stained-glass windows that reflect light across the detailed carvings. [1]
- Victorian Innovation: Built with pioneering technology for its time, it was the first home in the world to feature a purpose-built indoor heated swimming pool and was the first house in Scotland to install electric lighting.
- The Kitchen Garden: A massive, beautifully manicured layout featuring a distinctive Victorian glasshouse conservatory at its centre.
- The Rock Garden: Designed by the famous landscaper Rosemary Verey, incorporating winding water streams and a diverse palette of colourful, exotic plants.
- Coastal Woodlands & Beach: The estate paths extend through towering native trees down to a private sandy shoreline where visitors frequently spot seals resting in the bay.
- Opening Hours: The grounds and exhibitions are open Monday to Sunday from 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM.
